Field Training

All engineering programs require students to undertake training in an approved and related engineering institution (governmental, commercial, or industrial) for at least 8 successive weeks inside Jordan and 6 weeks outside Jordan for students registered for the year 2017 and before, or at least7 successive weeks inside or outside Jordan for students registered for the year 2018 and beyond. The students must submit a comprehensive report after the end of the training period, specifying the nature of training he/she undertook, and the benefits and expertise they gained from the training.

The Faculty of Engineering assigns an assistant dean dedicated for this task. At the departmental level, the department assigns each year a faculty member(s) as a field training supervisor(s). The field training involves two levels of evaluation. The first level is a survey filled by the industrial field training supervisor. The survey is designed to test achievements of a particular program SOs. The information provided by the industrial supervisors provides valuable feedback on the level of achievement of our students on SOs. The second level is a report by the student at the end of the training period. Students are asked to provide a written report detailing their experience during the whole training period. This report is evaluated by the department field training supervisor, who assigns a Pass/Fail grade to attest to the achievement of the training program.

Students register field training course after passing 110 CrH for students registered for the year 2017 and before, or after passing 115 CrH for students registered for the year 2018 and beyond . This is normally done after completing the 4th year and prior to taking the capstone course. The goal of the training is to apply the knowledge acquired in prior coursework to a real-life situation under the supervision of qualified engineers. The field training also helps to improve the ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems, emphasizing quality issues, professional and ethical responsibility, safety and environmental aspects of science and technology, and provide experience in the use of modern engineering tools, techniques, and skills.

The field training is subjected to evaluation by the department and by the institution providing the training as follows:

Official and secret report prepared by the institution to the training officials.
Placement of students for field training and guidance offered prior to the training.
A log-book for student activity signed by his/her supervisor.
The trainee is required to submit a report by the end of his/her training.
Telephones follow up and/or plant trip by an assigned faculty member is used to monitor and improve the assigned daily or weekly activities during summer practice.
Feedback by the supervisor (usually the training engineer).

Detailed process of training:

The student registers the field training course after passing the prerequisite (completion of 110 CrH for students registered for the year 2017 and before, or 115 CrH for students registered for the year 2018 and beyond ).
The student chooses an institution or company within his specialization to take training there.
The academic department approves this institution or helps in finding approved training (institution, company, organization,...)
A letter is sent from the university to the company or institution in which the student will take the training.
One of the faculty members in a particular academic department is assigned as a supervisor to follow up the training of students.
In the case that the training is inside Jordan, the student receives from his academic department all training evaluation forms in a sealed envelope and works on handing it over to the training authority,
The supervisor makes periodic visits to the student during training period which lasts for eight weeks, and at the end of the training, the student receives the training forms in a sealed envelope from the training authority and delivers it to the supervisor. The student must prepare a detailed report on the training period. Then the report will be discussed with a committee consisting of the supervisor and another faculty member from the same department.
If the training is outside Jordan, the training supervisor communicates with training authority and send all training evaluation forms to them confidentially. The supervisor conducts virtual visits to students during the training period which lasts for six weeks, the aim of visits is evaluating the performance of students and recording the observations of the training authority. At the end of the training period, the company sends the training forms confidentially to the supervisor. At the end of the training period, a distance discussion between the academic supervisor and the student takes place.

Exemption from field training

According to AAU regulations, diploma students (bridging students) enrolled in any engineering undergraduate program are exempted from field training after successfully completing 110 CrH for students registered for the year 2017 and before, or 115 CrH for students registered for the year 2018 and beyond).
hours. This happens in two cases:

1. If the field training is a graduation requirement in the study plan of diploma students.
2. If student obtains a certificate of practical experience for a period of two years at least in the field of his specialization after getting the diploma from a collage.

Diploma students should register field training like other students if he/she did not finish field training during diploma level and did not have work experience in his/her specialty.
